Sculpture

I have changed my Idea from before. Instead of clay and the other design, I will be making my model out of LEGO. I am replicating the orphanage at Balcombe Heights Estate, my original idea was to model it so the walls were broken down and the children; the orphans were playing inside. This is to represent the orphanage no longer being in use as an orphanage and the children playing is to represent the good times they had and the history of the building.
After this I didn't really like the look of it and I also built it too small so I changed my design. Instead of the children playing inside I chose to have them stand outside on the steps with two adults with their hands on the children's shoulders. I also made the decision of having the whole house built instead of having it broken down. I might also have children playing outside of the building but I am still undecided about that.
This is the building:

Since I cannot get all of the colours correct I am going to spray paint some of the bricks so it can correctly represent the original building.

Design

I have decided to design a waterfall, inspired by other artists basing their sculptures off nature. I am going to make it out of clay since it is easier to work with and is forgiving enough for some mistakes. The waterfall can have different meanings, I see it as the water falling as life and how life always progresses and never stops and when the water hits the bottom that is thee end of one's life but as always it keeps going after; new life.
The top left sketch is the general shape, the bottom left is a sketch to see how it would look with jagged edges representing rocks which also has it's own meaning, that meaning being the hiccups in life; any issues, big or small. Finally on the right is a sketch putting detail into the water to see how it would look and i'm happy with the outcome. Now I will have to see how good it looks on the clay.

These are my 3 influencing artists because they use nature as their inspiration/design/materials. The fact that natural materials and having them inspired by nature is very interesting. The first work by Britt Mikkelson is interesting because everyone sees spiders as creepy or scary bur Mikkelson saw it as beautiful especially their creations; their webs. I also agree that what they create is very complex and interesting. Akira Kamada also has a very interesting work making the work suit the location like it was always there. She said, “I have created this work Refuge in order to invite viewers to come inside and reflect on the essentials required to meet their basic need for shelter.” This is very important to bring everyone's high heads back to reality so they realize what situations people all over the world are in; if it's trying to find a better home or country or trying to get as much money as possible no matter how little just to keep their family alive. People realize how lucky they are to have what ever they have. So this artwork, although it looks unimpressive or unimportant, challenges the view of society on materialism and how lucky they are to be in a safe place.
